Reynolds Gorge

Reynolds Gorge is tucked away between Mt Bangalora and Mt Roberts in the Scenic Rim about 100km from Brisbane. It is one for the summer months as a prolonged time in the gorge could be a hypothermic experience. Have done this once before and am preparing to do it again on Sunday the 16th of November. Already have one walker signed up and five others who have indicated they want to come but I need to cap this at 10 to minimise the impact as it is a special area.

The walk was fantastic and not as hard or as long as my first attempt in May 2008. The weather was hot and humid which justified the 5:30 am departure from Brisbane. Six walkers including myself took part.

The gorge itself only takes a couple of hours with long breaks within it but is well worth the trip. A 40 m rope is needed to negotiate the last drop over a waterfall, otherwise there are a couple of leaps and short sections of water treading.

The water was barely flowing when we did this but with 30 mm dumped in the afternoon by fierce storms that would change (only we had left the creek by then).

The afternoon exit was earlier than anticipated due to the overcast conditions making it cooler to ascend Bangalora.

There is an awesome lookout with unique Scenic Rim views just north of the summit. We rested here but were prompted on by the approaching thunderstorms which were developing rapidly.

As there was a significant lightning risk we descended to the cars quite rapidly from the summit. The strategy was to avoid the tallest conductors and to be as far from the trunks as possible. Gulley desceding increased the risk of dislodged rocks but the slope is fairly stable even though it is initially very steep.

A great day and great company. Let's do it again!
